Cathy Jo Van Dyn Hoven (Schuette), age 47, went to be with the Lord on January 28th, 2026, after a short battle with an aggressive cancer. She was surrounded by the love of family members praying over her during her last moments. The family is saddened by the loss but are grateful she no longer is suffering or in pain.
Cathy was born on July 25, 1978, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, the beloved daughter of Clarence and Dona Schuette. She graduated from Appleton West High School in 1996. Cathy continued her education and followed her passion at Fox Valley Technical College school of Aviation. She advanced from private pilot, to commercial, to certified flight instructor and then Airline Transportation pilot. Cathy used her skills and knowledge teaching flight lessons for several years prior to piloting for Mesaba airlines as well as Air Wisconsin Airlines. Due to an injury in 2003, her flight career ended. She prepared for a new career by completing a bachelor’s in business from UW Oshkosh. She continued working at Air Wisconsin as Manager of Maintenance Planning where she met her husband Nate Van Dyn Hoven. In 2019, Cathy left the aviation industry and began working at Appvion, a paper coating company, where she was the manager of Planning and Procurement.
Cathy married Nate Van Dyn Hoven on March 1st, 2008, at Christ the Rock Church in Menasha. She was a devoted, loving and supportive wife. Nate referred to Cathy as his “favorite human.” Cathy’s presence lit up every room she entered with her outward beauty while her true beauty was actually contained within her. She possessed a kindness, compassion, and a desire to help and recognize others. Her personality was one that drew people in. When least expected Cathy would inject witty sarcasm into conversations that created smiles and brought laughter.
Cathy was creative with scrapbooking & stamping, jewelry making, sewing, and crocheting. She enjoyed gardening, farmers markets, making jams, canning and sharing her work with others. Cathy also enjoyed shopping for new styles of clothing especially on a good sale and items for her kitchen, both of which brought her joy.
Cathy was a fighter; she survived cancer at 21 months old and again at age 9. She lived with regular headaches and frequent migraines over the last ten years as well as other ailments resulting from her prior health challenges. The decision to end the fight and move to hospice was difficult. Nate was at Cathy’s side supporting and showering her with care and love during the journey from diagnosis till her final breath.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband of nearly 18 years, Nathan (Nate) Van Dyn Hoven; her father, Clarence Schuette; her sister, Cherilyn (Jeff) Trzebiatowski; she is further survived by her parent in-laws who loved her like she was their daughter, Jeff and Cindy Van Dyn Hoven; Brother-in-laws, Ben (Amy) Van Dyn Hoven, Nels (Heidi) Van Dyn Hoven, Sam (Kristen) Van Dyn Hoven; Nieces and Nephews: Danika and Kaylee Trzebiatowski, Reid and Madalyn Van Dyn Hoven (Ethan Lusk), Landon and Dominic Van Dyn Hoven, Becket and Zane Van Dyn Hoven. Her best friend and ‘sister from another mother’, Megan (Jason) Wagner. Cathy was preceded in death by her mother, Dona Schuette.
The family is grateful to the amazing staff at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton for the outstanding care both physically and emotionally that Cathy received during her stay and the support provided to Nate and the family and friends that came to visit her.
A Celebration of Cathy’s Life will be held on March 19th, 2026, at Van Abel’s of Hollandtown, 8108 County Trunk HWY D, Kaukauna, WI 54130. All are invited to gather from 3-5 pm with a service occurring at 5 pm and a meal to follow the fellowship and celebration of Cathy. If you can stay for the dinner, please RSVP to one of the family members by March 06, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to help offset medical expenses would be appreciated. Nate would also like to make a donation to Cancer research in Cathy’s name
