Dad

Our hard working, story telling, proud father, grandpa, and great grandpa passed away on Saturday August 8, 2026 surrounded by loved ones.

Dan was born November 4, 1934 to Raymond and Rose (Wydeven) Schommer. He was one of four children who all preceded him in death.

On June 28, 1958 he married Lois Frank and they celebrated 58 years of marriage until mom’s passing in 2016. Mom’s death left an enormous void in dad’s life.

They raised 3 children at their home on 11th Street. When dad whistled, the whole neighborhood knew it was time for the Schommer kids to get home! That neighborhood was full of fun!

He was a Korean War Veteran, traveling to Washington DC with the Old Glory Honor Flight. He had so many stories to share about his time in the service.

He thrived in sports, excelling in boxing and football. But golf became his free time favorite. He also loved a good game of cards and especially loved his Villa Card Club.

Dad was a wonderful provider. When he was laid off, he worked three jobs to keep us afloat. You’d never know by how our Christmas tree looked and the gifts under it.

When our sister Becky was born with many health issues, the bills kept piling up. Our Grandma Schommer prayed a storm Novena for our family. Not long after, our dad was hit from behind by a Coca Cola truck! The settlement covered all of Becky’s bills.

Dad is survived by his three children, Tracy (Jeff) Wydeven, Terri (Rick) Kuchelmeister, and Bill (Michelle) Schommer.

Grandchildren Brad (Macaira) Wydeven, Kurt (Ashley) Kuchelmeister, Laina Wydeven, Billy (Hailey) Schommer, Brianna Schommer, Mackenzie (Kevan) VanAsten, Noah Schommer, Eli Schommer (special friend Summer Aldinger)

Great Grandchildren Harper, Callen, Lily, Ella, Olivia, Finlen , Evelynn, Paisley, Skylar, Jada, Ava, Aiden, Wyatt, and one baby boy on the way.

Dan is further survived by his in-laws, Donald and Carol Frank, Karl and Nancy Frank, Thomas Frank and Karen Schommer.

He was preceded in death by our mom, Lois and our sister Becky, his parents Ray and Rose Schommer, and Lois’s parents Melbourne and Dorothy Frank. Also his brothers Ray Schommer, Monsignor Mark Schommer, his sister Sister Mary Lee Schommer, In laws Lloyd and Pat Kloehn, and Virginia Ranquette.

His yearbook said, Daniel Schommer… “ A flashy young lad on the football team. A date with him all the girls did dream!” Oh boy! Best looking guy in Kaukauna! He reminded us often. Love you dad!

The funeral will be held Tuesday August 25th with 2:00 Visitation at St Paul Elder Services, 316 E East 14th st. Kaukauna. Funeral mass begins at 3:00 with Father John Francis presiding. Father kindly gave dad the Anointing just four days before dad passed. Dad enjoyed mass with Father John, always remarking what a wonderful mass he provided.
