Donna (Van Gompel-Grygny) Schlegel (1934-2025) Obituary

Passed away peacefully at the Age of 90 on Wednesday May 28th 2025. At the VNA in Neenah.

Born in Neenah, WI on December 15th 1934, daughter of the late Edward & Bernetta Van Gompel. Donna married Clarie Grygny in 1954 together they had three children. She worked as a secretary at American Can Co. out of Neenah, WI. She was awarded Miss March in 1967 and had her picture put on their freezer wrap at the time. After her first husband Clarie passing in 1962 from a vehicle accident, she transferred to Greenwich, CT in 1970. While living in Connecticut she met John (Jack) Schlegel where they eventually were married in 1973.

Donna was strong willed and knew what she wanted. She was an avid Packer Fan! She attended the 1967 Ice Bowl and the first two Super Bowls while living in Neenah. She always had a following for her team even while living on the East Coast. Donna enjoyed golfing and spending time with Jack at their cabin in Vermont skiing. She had a passion for fishing and went on trips with family and friends to a cabin in the Adirondacks on a remote lake, Lake George in New York, and a trip to Eagle Lake in Canada. Donna liked being social and loved dinning out, eating one of her favorite meals of Lobster!

After Jacks passing in 2005, Donna eventually moved back to Wisconsin where she lived with her son and his wife. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially Greatgrandchildren.

Donna had a lot of memories and liked to keep something from all of them!

Donna is survived by her son, Jerry (Julie) Grygny, step-son, John B. (Nancy) Schlegel, and step-daughter, Lynn (Mark) Wezenski; grandchildren, Cole (Beki) Grygny, Chase (Amy) Grygny, step-grandchildren, Ashley Kloes, Ben (Breeanna) Kloes, Eleanor Schlegel, Daniel (Eden) Schlegel, Sarah Schlegel, Erika Wezenski, Mark Wezenski; great grandchildren, Ryff, Arco, and Quinn Grygny, Bentley, Beau, and Ayla Marcks, Brynley and Briella Kloes; sisters, Nancy (Jack) Zolkowski, Pat (Jim) Bauman, and sister in-law Evie Van Gompel and Carol (Rich) Cathcart.

Donna is further preceded in death by her parents, Edward & Bernetta Van Gompel; in-laws, Mike and Margret Grygny; husbands, Clarie Grygny and John A. Schlegel; children, Randy Grygny and Steven Grygny; sisters, Clarine and (Jim) Meyer, Carol and (Donnie) Brunner; brother, Earl Van Gompel; sister in-law, Barb Willarson.

She will be missed dearly. There will be a celebration of life for her at a later date in July of this year. In Lieu of Flowers a donation to a local animal shelter can be made as she loved her animals.
