Jeanne M. Carney

June 24, 1934 — April 5, 2026

Jeanne Mary Layden Carney, wife of her beloved Charles Francis Carney (deceased 1996), resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, and recent resident of Waterman Village in Mount Dora, Florida, passed away on April 5th, 2026, at 10:28 p.m. Central Daylight Time due to complications arising from the surgical repair of a broken hip.

Jeanne Mary Layden was born on June 24th, 1934 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She grew up in Montreal, eventually graduating Thomas D’Arcy McGee high school in 1951.

Jeanne always had an adventurous streak. After graduating high school, she started working at Bell Canada, where she joined the dance troop that travelled around Canada entertaining various groups, including the armed forces. As part of that, she entertained the troops north of the arctic circle! In 1959 when she was 25, she immigrated to the United States and took up residence in Carmel, California. A friend of hers from her time at Bell Canada named Maureen Crooks got her a job there working at Pacific Bell. When she first arrived, she needed a car and heard that the MG Sprite was a good car because it cornered well. She promptly went to the dealership to buy one and asked for it to be delivered. When asked why she didn’t just drive it home, she explained that she didn’t know how to drive and didn’t have a license! She learned how to drive in that little manual transmission sports car.

On her way home from visiting her brother Maurice and his new wife Pauline in San Francisco for the Christmas holiday in 1964, she decided to stop in at a New Year’s Eve party in Mountain View to which she had been invited by a friend. This turned out to be a fateful decision. Across the room she saw a handsome man flirting with another woman. He locked eyes with Jeanne, politely excused himself from the conversation, walked across the room and introduced himself to her as Chuck Carney. She stayed the night with a friend and the following morning met Chuck for breakfast and mass at the local Catholic Church. This was their first date, and with that, her adventures continued. They were engaged 3 months later, and got married 3 months after that on June 26th, 1965 at the beautiful Carmel Mission Basilica, right down the street from where Jeanne had lived since relocating there. In an effort to save money for their future lives together, their honeymoon was short but sweet. They stayed for a night at The Madonna Inn in San Louis Obispo, CA, just a couple of hours away.

Shortly after getting married they bought a house in Sunnyvale, California with plans to raise a family there. Just ten months after they married, on April 24th, 1966 they had their first child, Michael David Carney, followed 2 years later by their second child, Scott Layden Mark Carney on July 3rd, 1968. They made a home and remained there raising their children through little league, soccer, music lessons, high school dances, various teenage trials and tribulations, and family vacations with occasional visits to Chuck’s family in West Virginia and Jeanne’s family in Canada. The kids eventually left home and made lives of their own. During all of this, in 1979, she proudly became a naturalized citizen of The United States of America.

After Chuck retired, and after nearly 30 years in Sunnyvale, they sold their home and relocated to Santa Rosa, California, in 1992. In 1995 they joined the Santa Rosa Country Club where Chuck golfed to his heart’s content, and Jeanne made new friends and played bridge. They saw an opportunity to buy their dream home right next to the country club and moved there in April 1996. Only about a month after this move, Chuck unexpectedly passed away on May 15th, 1996 from complications following the catheterization of his heart and stent implantation.

Although devastated by the loss of her beloved husband Chuck, her adventurous nature wouldn’t let her slow down. She stayed at the house in Santa Rosa for a while, but eventually grew restless and relocated several times, finally settling down in Florida, first at Royal Harbor in Tavares, and then finally at Waterman Village in Mount Dora. She joined the Mount Dora Duplicate Bridge Club (eventually earning enough bridge master points to become a life master), making many new friends, working in the gift shop, attending the local theater, taking up line dancing, going on vacations with friends, and in general enjoying her life. Living there, she was able to see and spend time with her sister Katherine and her husband Gordon, and brother Frank and his wife Nancy, who wintered in Florida from their homes in Canada. Her sons and their families also visited frequently.

Recently, she had decided that she needed more help and wanted to be closer to family. She and her sons decided that her best move would be to a senior living facility near her granddaughter Vanessa in Appleton, Wisconsin. She moved there in mid-March 2026. While there she stayed in contact with some friends in Mount Dora and expressed how happy she was to be around family, especially her two great-grandsons. In early April, she fell in her kitchen and broke her hip. Not wanting to finish her life bedridden, she chose to have a partial hip replacement performed the following day. Unfortunately, due to several complicating factors and her age, she passed away shortly after the procedure. She was at peace and surrounded by family until the very end.

Jeanne lived life on her terms. She was married to Chuck for 30 years, and spent 30 years apart from him after he passed. At last, they are reunited.

She is survived by her son, Michael, his wife, Danae, their daughter, Vanessa Mulcahey, her husband, Sean, their two sons, Henry and Charlie, and their daughter, Madison Sena, her husband, Wagner, and their daughter, Emilia. Additionally, she is survived by her son Scott and his wife, Kristin, their son, Ryan, and their daughter, Rachel.
