John Allen Pownell

May 30, 1959 — May 14, 2025

John Allen Pownell, age 65, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in his wife's arms and surrounded by his children. He was born on May 30, 1959, in Milwaukee, WI.

John married the love of his life, Penny Pergler, on October 3, 1978, in Antigo, WI. Together they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure.

He spent many years working at Anchor Foods before health challenges arose. John bravely battled numerous serious illnesses over the years, including two bouts of Blastomycosis, which led to further complications. Despite the odds, he lived decades longer than expected—a gift his family will forever cherish.

John found joy in the outdoors, especially camping and fishing at 7 Mile and Franklin Lake Campgrounds in Three Lakes, WI. He spent 16 cherished years living there, a place he considered home. Visits from children and grandchildren were always memorable—especially when it came to guessing what wild game might be for dinner, thanks to his well-stocked freezer.

Eventually, John and Penny moved back to the Fox Valley to be closer to family. He deeply treasured every moment spent with his loved ones—especially his grandchildren, with whom he shared a special bond.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Penny; his children, Jenny (Sean) Gonzales, and their children, Seth and Cierra Gonzales; and Jesse (Nora) Pownell, and their son Jacob. He is also survived by his father, James Pownell, his brother Chris (Kathy) Pownell, and many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Demerath Pownell; his siblings Cindy Selle, James Pownell Jr., and Crystal Pownell; his in-laws John and Pat Pergler; and brother-in-law John Pergler. He is also reunited with the many four-legged companions who brought him so much joy through the years.

Per Johns wishes, there will be no formal funeral. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In John's honor, crack open a cold Buschhhh Light and chase it with a shot of Jack—just the way he loved it!

The Pownell family extends heartfelt thanks to ThedaCare at Home Hospice, especially his nurse, Ben, for the care and compassion shown in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Heart of the Valley Funeral Home, Little Chute, WI, is assisting the family.
