May 3, 1960 — May 11, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Thomas Penney, who passed away on May 11th, 2025, at the age of 65. Upon diagnosis of cancer just 3 short weeks ago, hospice followed just a week later. Born May 3, 1960 in Neenah, Mike was welcomed into the world and immediately into the loving arms of his cherished paternal grandmother, Verna Moreau Penney, a caring and compassionate nurse at the then Theda Clark Hospital.

Mike's childhood was filled with memories, including countless picnics with his grandparents. He especially enjoyed their outings to the Red Mill in Waupaca, where he would eagerly explore the riverbanks, searching for snakes and frogs. Summers were adventures with family camping every single weekend in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. As he entered his early teens, weekends both summer and winter, were spent at their permanent camp on Chute Pond where he participated in snowmobiling, fishing, ice skating, tubing, and swimming. He was a tremendous father that took the time to teach his Son and Daughter life long skills and lessons.

Mike graduated from Appleton East High School in 1979. In 1986, he married Tammie Morrison, with whom he shared a deep and loving bond. One of Mike's greatest passions was his love for beautiful fish aquariums. He dedicated countless hours to these vibrant underwater worlds. The beauty and artistry of his well-designed aquariums brought him a sense of calmness and serenity, especially in his final days.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Tammie Penney, who was the recipient of his unwavering compassion, nurturing spirit, and devotion. He is also survived by his loving children: Chelsie (Eric) Linders and their daughter, NovaLee; and Calvin Penney and his children, Klavin, Vaidyn, and Zailen, all of Appleton, Wisconsin. His life revolved around his dear grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lee E Penney and is survived by his mother, Shirley Penney, whom he faithfully called every single day. He will be missed by his sisters, Carla (Mike) Gibbons and Sharon (Tom) Elsen; his brother, Jerry Penney; his brother-in-law, Ron (Kim) Hakenjos; his wonderful and kind friend DJ and father Dan, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service will be held on Monday, May 19th, that will start at 6pm at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2909 N. Roemer Rd., Appleton, WI 54911.
