Fox Crossing

Heaven just got a stronger will and a lot more determination for all (both spiritual and humankind).

Steven “Steve” Francis Jones departed this life on April 17, 2026, at the age of 79 and was born on November 2, 1946, in Horton, Kansas. Steve was a beloved husband, cherished role model to family, and a respected figure in his community.

Steve was the son of the Dale Jones and Betty Cleek who preceded him in death. His parents instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and humility. He graduated from Atchison High School then answered the call of duty for the USA.

Steve served with pride as a Seabee in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. His time in the Navy was marked by an unwavering commitment to his comrades and a deep love for his nation.

After his military service, Steve embarked on a successful career in manufacturing as the owner of Liquid Asphalt Systems and Panther Products. His work was not just a means of livelihood but a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and keen business acumen. He led his companies with integrity and was admired by colleagues and employees alike for his fairness and vision.

In his personal life, Steve was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his thoughts were insightful and meaningful. He had a knack for cutting through the noise and getting to the heart of a matter, a quality that was endeared by those who knew him.

Steve's greatest joy came from his family, who carry forward his values and love.

Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jones (nee Neaves), whom he was married to for 21 years. Steve was a devoted husband and treated Carol like a princess.

Steve is survived by his second wife, Kathryn Jones (nee Long), and they too, were married 21 years. Steve carried on his love and commitment with Kathryn.

Steve was supportive and kind as a brother and uncle. He is survived by brother Johnny Jones, sister Mary McGinness (Joe), nieces Kellie Wentz, Tracy Linden (Paul Stamm) and Katie Linden, nephews Todd Neaves and Tim Neaves, great nephew Lucas Linden (Jessica), great niece Madison McClafferty (Jeff) and great nieces Nora Morey and Kate McClafferty.

He became a caring mentor to his 2 stepchildren and their children. He is survived by Garrett Smith (Brooke) and Alison Smith; and their children Avery Ulman, Theodore Rogge and Greyson Smith.

Steven found solace and joy in boating; a hobby that allowed him to connect with friends (especially his forever best friend, Mort Marlett who preceded him in death) through dock life, waterskiing, coving-out and a myriad of other activities on the water.

In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial ceremony will be held to honor Steve's life in Fox Crossing, Wisconsin and Atchison/Kansas City area (details to be determined).
