Fox Valley Grief Network

The Fox Valley Grief Network (FVGN) is comprised of professionals and non-professionals who journey with the bereaved in the Fox Valley area. The group includes people working in a variety of professions: social worker, counselor, clergy, lay minister, parish nurse, hospice volunteer, bereavement support coordinator, school guidance counselor, funeral directors, chaplain, etc.

  • The group gathers for the purpose of:
  • Networking with other professionals in the field to share resources and expertise
  • Learning about area programs, support systems, resources, and events in the Fox Valley
  • Identifying and addressing areas of grief support that may be lacking
  • Understanding the journey of grief
  • Remaining current in methods that are most effective in journeying with the bereaved

Grief Gathering

Grief gatherings will be an experience for patients, families, and staff to find much-needed
support and healing as they processes and integrate significant losses in their lives.

  • We will meet for six weeks in a row, four times a year. This is an interfaith, non-religious gathering that will include practices, reflections, sharing and listening, and memory making geared at integrating grief into one’s life. All ages are welcome and is open to the general public. Attendees are encouraged to come for all 6 weeks. RSVPs are encouraged.

  • THEO (To Help Each Other) – Support and learning for those who have experienced the loss of a spouse or a loved one.   • Learning, Laughter, Tears – Group meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 3:30 pm in the 2nd floor lounge at Appleton Retirement Community, 200 W. Packard Street, Appleton. This is a drop-in group that offers support of others who have suffered a loss. Group is led by a Chaplain and social worker from Southern Care Hospice.   • Journey of Hope -The Journey of Hope grief support group takes place the first Thursday of each month, 6:00pm at The Hoffman Memory Care Resource Center within St. Paul Elder Services, 316 E. Fourteenth Street Kaukauna, WI 54130 (please enter through the 13th street entrance).   • Navigating Grief – This group meets on five consecutive Tuesdays from 1:30–3:00 pm or 6:00–7:30 p.m. throughout the year in De Pere and is open to any adult member of the community who has experienced the death of a loved one. Meetings include topics such as common reactions to grief, memories, coping and adjusting to new roles, self-care traditions and finding hope.   • Women’s Luncheon – This monthly opportunity is for bereaved women to gather for informal conversation and support. It is held on the third Wednesday of every month from noon to 1:30 pm at a local Green Bay restaurant. Lunch is available for purchase off the menu.   • Understanding Grief – This monthly support group is for any adult who has experienced the death of a loved one. Meetings will include such topics as common reactions to grief, memories, coping and adjusting to new roles, self-care, traditions and finding hope. This group is held monthly on Wednesdays in Marinette, Wausaukee, Gillett and Sturgeon Bay. Check the calendar for scheduled times for each location.   • A Time to Mourn – A six week grief group offering support for adults who have experienced the death of a loved one. The group is led by professionals trained in grief support.   • Drop-In Group – Adult support group for individuals who have experienced the death of a loved one. Group meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month , 1-2:30 pm at the Oshkosh Senior Center, 200 North Campbell Road. No fee.   • Men Journeying Through Grief – A unique support opportunity for men only. Gathering includes a home cooked meal followed by sharing of grief information and support resources. Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month, 6:00-8:00 pm at Affinity Visiting Nurses office, 816 W. Winneconne Avenue Neenah. Pre-registration is not required, but appreciated for meal planning.   • Grief Connection – This group meets on five consecutive Tuesdays from 1:30–3:00 pm or 6:00–7:30 pm throughout the year in De Pere and is open to any adult member of the community who has experienced the death of a loved one.   • Healing Thru the Arts – Healing Thru the Arts is a hands-on creative grief group for adults. The workshop is led by a Grief Counselor who will provide support and guidance throughout the session. Healing Thru the Arts will be held the 4th Thursday of every month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm OR 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Grieving Families

  • Generations – Hope for Grieving Families – This monthly program is designed to support grieving families with children and teens ages 6-18. Dinner is served each evening at no charge. Holiday Grief Programs

Widow/Widower

  • New Beginnings – Social dinner groups for widows and widowers. Advance registration is appreciated.
  • When/Where: Meets the 1st Friday of the month for a fish fry at the Darboy Club, N9695 County Road N, Appleton. Grieving Parents

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley – Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Center for Grieving Children of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley offer ongoing peer support to any parent who has experienced the death of a child, newborn to 18 years of age. Parents are welcome to join the group at any time and at any stage in their grief journey. Group meets at the Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Valley, 160 S. Badger Avenue, Appleton.   • Resolve Through Sharing – A free support group for those who have experienced a miscarriage, stillborn or infant death. Group meets the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:00-7:30 pm at Agnesian Bereavement Center, 1161 W. Johnson Street, Fond du Lac.   • Remember Through Sharing – Supports those who have experienced a miscarriage, stillborn, ectopic, or neonatal death. Special commemorative events, such as the Walk to Remember and Candlelight Memorial, are held during the year. For more information, contact Joan, RTS coordinator at (920) 729-2087.
  • SHARE Pregnancy & Infant Loss – Share is a resource for families who experience a death of a baby. Groups meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday at 7:00 pm at St. Vincent Hospital, 835 S. Van Buren, Green Bay. Contact Mary Salm for more information:

  • Pathway to Peace – An ecumenical memorial service for those who have experienced pregnancy loss or infant loss. Services are held three times each year through St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton & twice each year at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh. Veterans

  • Military Support Group – Group meets the first Monday of every month, 7:00 p.m. at the 395th Ordinance Company Armory, 1824 Ballard Road, Appleton. This support group is for Bluestar & Goldstar families for those that have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Military and those families that have lost loved ones in combat.   • Military and Veteran Family Support Network – Group Meets every Saturday, 9:30-11:00 am on the 3rd floor at The Center for Suicide Awareness inside St. Paul Elder Services, 316, E. 14th Street, Kaukauna. This support network provides a series of conversations that bring military and veteran families together for support and strengthen family relationships. Resources and tools will be shared to help military family members understand how and why PTSD and other mental health traumas affect relationships, discover and share valuable skills, tools and support strategies to build a strong family network.   • V.A. Bradley Clinic – Counseling is available for qualified veterans that have been screened & examined for treatment through the V.A. Healthcare System only. A free support group for those who have lost a spouse/partner. Group meets the 1st Wednesday of each month

Children

  • Center for Grieving Children – The Center conducts an evening Family Night program on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, from 6-8 PM during the school year. These gatherings begin with a shared meal and visits from our therapy dog teams. Participants then break up into five age groups with adults having their own groups as well. Trained facilitators and support volunteers lead group members through activities designed for the sharing of feelings, life experiences, and memories. These activities often include arts, crafts, interactive games and discussion. The evening ends with a candlelight commemorative ceremony.A onetime orientation with the Director is the only requirement to attend. Contact Loris Damerow at 750-5839.


  • Peer Support Groups – For children ages 3-18, and the adults who care for them, who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives. Groups meets twice a month from 6-8 pm at the Boys and Girls Club, 160 S. Badger Avenue, Appleton. This free program provides small support groups for all ages, including the adults.   • Camp Hope – A weekend program providing an atmosphere of love and acceptance for children to express themselves following the death of a loved one. Camps take place at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, Wisconsin in spring and fall. No fee. Contact by calling (715) 341-0076.

  • Camp Lloyd – A week long camp for children grieving the death of a loved one. Camp Lloyd is a safe environment for campers to explore feelings of grief and gain support from one another. Camp takes place during one week each summer on the University of Wisconsin Green Bay campus. Cost is $40 per camper or $55 for families.   • Children and Teen Grief Support Network – Children and teens grieving a death often feel like no one understands what they are going through. And truthfully, no one’s grief is exactly the same. But those who are grieving often appreciate most being able to share with others who are also grieving a death. In support groups, there is no right or wrong way to be. They won’t be told it’s time to move on or that an emotion they have is wrong or inappropriate. Through talking and listening, they’re free to find hope and comfort in your own personal way. That’s where the Children and Teen Grief Support Network comes in. Children’s Grief Support Network is a program at the Club that provides compassionate care to kids, teens, and families in Oshkosh who have experienced a loss through education and peer group support sessions. (You do not need to be a member of the Boys & Girls Club to participate!)Healing begins in a safe, non-judgmental space where children, teens and their families can engage in conversations and activities which honor their deceased loved one. Holiday Grief Programs

  • Hope for the Holidays – Losing someone to death and journeying through the grieving process is difficult. This FREE seminar will offer practical ways to help you journey through grief with hope in the midst of the holidays. Seminar is held every year in November at Wichmann Tri-County Chapel, 1592 Oneida Street, Menasha.   • Grief Share: Surviving the Holidays – When you are grieving a loved one’s death, the holiday season can be especially painful. This seminar helps participants discover: how to deal with emotions, what to do about traditions, helpful tips for surviving social events and how to find hope for the future.   • Blue Christmas Worship Service – First Congregational UCC, 724 E. South River Street, Appleton will hosts a Blue Christmas worship service in their intimate chapel for those who are experiencing a sense of loss during the Christmas season. At the service, you are invited to light a candle in memory of a loved one or as an intercessory prayer for a situation that is creating sadness. Other Supports

  • Hospice Memorial Services – Many area hospices conduct memorial services throughout the year for the families they have journeyed with and for the general public. Please contact them directly for more information.
  • Local Churches – Don’t forget your local church, synagogue or mosque. Pastors, priests, rabbis, lay ministers, Stephen & Be-Friender Ministries, and Care Ministry can provide comfort and support to the grieving. Faith communities often offer memorial services during the course of the year
  • Fullness of Life – An ecumenical prayer service for grieving families. For dates and times, contact St. Elizabeth Hospital at (920) 738-2655 or Mercy Medical Center at (920) 223-0120.
  • Professional Counseling – While the experience of loss, anger, and sadness is a necessary part of grief work, it can be difficult to do without professional support of some kind. Professional counselors play an important role in facilitating health grieving and observing signs of complicated grief that can lead to major depression. The Fox Valley area is fortunate to have many qualified, competent, and compassionate counselors. For referrals, please contact your clergy, health care provider and a close and trusted friend.
